少林寺乃江湖武术宗师所在地，清朝政府欲统一天下，视少林为大患，设法去铲除它。 清政府藉天地会首脑陈近南藏身少林寺，趁机派大量官兵及高手消灭少林，寺内僧人四散，少林寺毁于火海。至善禅师自焚之前，嘱咐俗家弟子洪熙官及方世玉一定要重建少林寺。 洪、方二人访寻昔日同门胡惠乾，欲暗杀少林叛徒高进忠以报仇，惜事败，世玉被白眉所伤，幸获两广总督曾必正之女曾玉媛所救。方、媛并暗订终生。 乾隆微服南巡，偶然下遇见玉媛，被其美貌所吸引，决定封媛为贵妃，但此时玉媛已怀有方之骨肉，媛父恐招惹灭门之祸，狠心杀女并嫁祸方世玉。 方世玉知悉玉媛身亡，屡次行刺乾隆，不遂，终被杀。 另一方面，胡惠乾为复兴少林，舍恬静生活前往报仇，失手逃亡。其妻王婉冰于危难中诞下麟儿，取名文定，幸得洪熙官照顾，胡一家团聚。 高进忠看上婉冰，故意折磨惠乾，胁迫冰下嫁。洞房之夜，婉冰趁进忠宿醉未醒欲杀之，惜事败，反被进忠一刀刺死。 婉冰香消玉殒，惠乾誓要报此血海深仇，后逃入京城，躲于敖坤府中为仆。惠乾利用高进忠、敖坤、曾必正的矛盾，使敖坤被斩。惜惠乾最终也性命不保，临终前托熙官抚养儿子文定。 洪熙官隐姓埋名，并将少林的虎鹤双形拳改良成功，成为民间易于掌握的洪拳，而文定也长大了。 十二年后，洪熙官乘开武馆之便，带文定到广州拜猴拳云四为师，并告以身世。文定从此努力练武。洪与文定连手，击毙高进忠和白眉。又击退众武师，替乾隆立功。乾隆最终允许洪的请求，重建少林。而洪拳、猴拳两家之长，均集中在胡惠乾的遗孤，即洪文定身上。
